Stages of film production


  •   Writer- The writer is someone who writes the script, they have to research and develop story ideas. There roles includes looking in-depth of understanding the story, plot and narrative. They have to understand the different ways that films affect the audience, they have to know how to format screenplays and they have to work to strict deadlines. A famous script writer is George Lucas who has written and also directed the Star Wars films.
  • Producer- A producer is someone who turns story ideas into profitable films, puts together a cast and crew and they are responsible for all areas of a film's production. The role of being a producers include having a lots of experience in the film industry. They must have a creative vision and creative processes of filmmaking. One of the most important things a producer must have is good communication skills because they will have to tell a lot of people who are working on the film what they have to do. A producer is the person who oversees all of the aspects of making a film and they will be put under pressure to make sure everyone is doing certain areas of work. An example of a famous producer is Walt Disney who has produced films like Cinderella, Mary Poppins and Alice and Wonderland.
  • Casting director- The job of a casting director is organising the cast and selecting Actors and Actresses for certain roles in a film. They have to arrange and host interviews and auditions for people wanting to enroll as a part in the film. The casting director will work closely with the director and producer. The role of a casting director includes having good knowledge of cinema and actors. They will have to have an interest in theatre and stage actors. One very important thing is that they will have to know how to work a video camera. An example of a casting director is Christopher Nolen, who has casted films like Interstellar, The dark Knight. 
  • Director - A director has to make the film script into images and sounds on the screen, they are responsible for the success or failure of a film. A lot of directors also write their own film scripts, they do this so they can get their own vision of what the film could be like when they finish it. Being a good director means like have to be passionate about filmmaking, this is key to a good film as it shows a lot of work has been put in to make it. Directors always want their film to be the best and they are keen to put a lot of detail into every element of the film. An example of a film director is Steven Spielberg who has made films such as ET, War horse, Jaws, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones.
  • Film Finance- Film finance are in charge of money involved in a film, a lot of the time they are checking how much money is spent and that the producer doesn't go over budget. Money for a film doesn't just come out of nowhere, people have to either ask large companies to invest in the film, or put the money to together from various different people. 
  • Camera Operator: A camera operator is someone who basically films the film and records images for shots of the film. The operator will make sure the camera is working as it should be and the equipment is reading to film. Camera operators work closely with directors to ensure that the vision of how the director wants the shot is filmed. Camera operators will also be in charge of their own team, members of their team could be working with other cameras to get shots at different angles.
  • Editor: The editors also work closely with the director to make sure that the way the shots are put together are how the director visioned. They work in an editing room using advanced technology to create the film. They  confirm that the film is running as it should from start to finish. A lot of films have different scenery that is filmed at different time so the editor's job is to put the shot in the same order.
  • Production designer: Production designers manage and look at each visual part of the film. They usually work with the producer and director, they are usually negotiating certain areas of the film. The production designer is in charge the films props, costumes and setting.
  • Marketing: People who are involved in marketing will look at the creation and planning for campaigns for the film. Their job is to make sure people of the right target audience see advertisement of the film and the advert will make people want to see the film. They have to make people want to watch the film and make adverts look good. Adverts for films are usually trailers for a film or posters.
